After dinner, Garrett enticed Gabriel upstairs to his master bedroom.
“I meant to ask you a long time ago why does a single man need all this space?” Gabriel asked as they stood on the balcony. Below them, a huge swimming pool reflected the moonlight and the patio looked like it belonged at some expensive hotel. Gabriel looked beyond the pool to the grove of trees in the back that swayed gently in the summer breeze. In the clearing, he could see a dilapidated structure that looked out of place, given the rest of the well-maintained property.
“Hopefully, I won’t be single for long,” he said. Garrett wrapped his arms around Gabriel’s waist and kissed the back of his neck.
“I want you to look up at the sky,” Garrett said suddenly.
“What?”
“Seriously, look at the sky and how wondrous and perfect it is. It is truly one of the most amazing things.”
Somewhat reluctantly, Gabriel focused on the sky adorned by perfect diamond-shaped droplets of light. He suddenly felt small and insignificant, as if his worries were petty compared to the power of the universe.
“Do you really think that perfection is happenstance?
“What if I told you that I wasn’t sure?”
“Then I’d say you haven’t been paying attention. Okay, now, I want you to close your eyes and open your ears.”
Gabriel turned and looked at him curiously.
“Just do it.”
Gabriel complied.
“If you listen closely, not only can you see evidence of God, but you can hear it. Let yourself go and listen to the night. I mean, really concentrate. Listen to the silent night. Have you ever wondered what’s behind the silence?”
Gabriel took a deep breath and decided to do as he was asked. For the first time in his life, he listened to the night. The simple sounds he had taken for granted for years now came through in Dolby sound. It wasn’t even the crickets or the sounds of an occasional car that struck him. It was the sound of the night itself.
“Did you hear it?” Garrett asked with glee. “The night speaks to us all—we just don’t listen.”
Gabriel opened his eyes and looked at Garrett. “I feel very…calm,” he said slowly.
“God is a calming force. All you have to do is listen and walk in what God has spoken for you.”
